The Probabilistic Dynamic Synthesis method is a new technique for obtaining the statistics of a desired response engineering quantity for a structure with non-deterministic parameters. The method uses measured data from modal testing of the structure as the input random variables, rather than more ''primitive'' quantities like geometry or material variation. This modal information is much more comprehensive and easily measured than the ''primitive'' information. The probabilistic analysis is...

CUORE-0 is a cryogenic detector that uses an array of tellurium dioxide bolometers to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of ^{130}Te. We present the first data analysis with 7.1 kg y of total TeO_2 exposure focusing on background measurements and energy resolution. The background rates in the neutrinoless double-beta decay region of interest (2.47 to 2.57 MeV) and in the {\alpha} background-dominated region (2.70 to 3.90 MeV) have been measured to be 0.071 \pm 0.011 and 0.019 \pm 0.002...

The application of cognitive mechanisms to support knowledge acquisition is, from our point of view, crucial for making the resulting models coherent, efficient, credible, easy to use and understandable. In particular, there are two characteristic features of intelligence that are essential for knowledge development: forgetting and consolidation. Both plays an important role in knowledge bases and learning systems to avoid possible information overflow and redundancy, and in order to preserve...

Persistent Homology is a fairly new branch of Computational Topology which combines geometry and topology for an effective shape description of use in Pattern Recognition. In particular it registers through "Betti Numbers" the presence of holes and their persistence while a parameter ("filtering function") is varied. In this paper, some recent developments in this field are integrated in a k-Nearest Neighbor search algorithm suited for an automatic retrieval of melanocytic...

An exact computation of the persistent Betti numbers of a submanifold $X$ of a Euclidean space is possible only in a theoretical setting. In practical situations, only a finite sample of $X$ is available. We show that, under suitable density conditions, it is possible to estimate the multidimensional persistent Betti numbers of $X$ from the ones of a union of balls centered on the sample points; this even yields the exact value in restricted areas of the domain. Using these inequalities we...

In this manuscript we investigate quantum uncertainties in a Tsallis' non additive scenario. To such an end we appeal to q-exponentials, that are the cornerstone of Tsallis' theory. In this respect, it is found that some new mathematics is needed and we are led to construct a set of novel special states that are the q-exponential equivalents of the ordinary coherent states of the harmonic oscillator. We then characterize these new Tsallis' special states by obtaining the associated i)...

We present a benchmark study for the adsorption of a large pi-conjugated organic molecule on different noble metal surfaces, which is based on X-ray standing wave (XSW) measurements and density functional theory calculations with van der Waals (vdW) interactions. The bonding distances of diindenoperylene on Cu(111), Ag(111), and Au(111) surfaces (2.51 A, 3.01 A, and 3.10 A, respectively) determined with the normal incidence XSW technique are compared with calculations. We present a search for beta plus/EC double beta decay of 120Te performed with the CUORICINO experiment, an array of TeO2 cryogenic bolometers. After collecting 0.0573 kg y of 120Te, we see no evidence of a signal and therefore set the following limits on the half-life: T1/2 (0nu) > 1.9 10^{21} y at 90% C.L. for the 0 neutrino mode and T1/2 (2nu) > 7.6 10^{19} y at 90% C.L. for the two neutrino mode. These results improve the existing limits by almost three orders of magnitude (four in...

Neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay is a hypothesized lepton-number-violating process that offers the only known means of asserting the possible Majorana nature of neutrino mass. The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an upcoming experiment designed to search for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay of $^{130}$Te using an array of 988 TeO$_2$ crystal bolometers operated at 10 mK. The detector will contain 206 kg of $^{130}$Te and have an average energy resolution of 5...

The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment will search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{130}$Te. With 741 kg of TeO$_2$ crystals and an excellent energy resolution of 5 keV (0.2%) at the region of interest, CUORE will be one of the most competitive neutrinoless double beta decay experiments on the horizon. With five years of live time, CUORE projected neutrinoless double beta decay half-life sensitivity is $1.6\times 10^{26}$ y at $1\sigma$...

This article is from BMC Microbiology , volume 13 . Abstract Background: The compound oenothein B (OenB), which is isolated from the leaves of Eugenia uniflora, a Brazilian Cerrado plant, interferes with Paracoccidioides yeast cell morphology and inhibits 1,3-β-D-glucan synthase (PbFKS1) transcript accumulation, which is involved in cell wall synthesis. In this work we examined the gene expression changes in Paracoccidioides yeast cells following OenB treatment in order to investigate the...

In recent years, the progress on low temperature detector technologies has allowed design of large scale experiments aiming at pushing down the sensitivity on the neutrino mass below 1\,eV. Even with outstanding performances in both energy ($\sim$eV on keV) and time resolution ($\sim 1\,\mu$s) on the single channel, a large number of detectors working in parallel is required to reach a sub-eV sensitivity. HOLMES is a new experiment to directly measure the neutrino mass with a sensitivity as low...

This work analyzes the classical statistical mechanics associated to phase-space curves in three dimensions. Special attention is paid to the entropic force. Strange effects like confinement, hard core, and asymptotic freedom are uncovered. Negative specific heats, that were previously seen to emerge in a one-dimensional setting, disappear in 3D, and with them, gravitational effects of the entropic force.

A search for axioelectric absorption of solar axions produced in the $ p + d \rightarrow {^3\rm{He}}+\gamma~(5.5~ \rm{MeV})$ reactions has been performed with a BGO detector placed in a low-background setup. A model-independent limit on an axion-nucleon and axion-electron coupling constant has been obtained: $| g_{Ae}\times g_{AN}^3| < 1.9\times 10^{-10}$ for 90% confidence level. The constrains of the axion-electron coupling have been obtained for hadronic axion with masses in (0.1 - 1) MeV...

We investigate first-order approximations to both i) Tsallis' entropy $S_q$ and ii) the $S_q$-MaxEnt solution (called q-exponential functions $e_q$). It is shown that the functions arising from the procedure ii) are the MaxEnt solutions to the entropy emerging from i). The present treatment is free of the poles that, for classic quadratic Hamiltonians, appear in Tsallis' approach, as demonstrated in [Europhysics Letters {\bf 104}, (2013), 60003]. Additionally, we show that our treatment is...

The primary aim of ANTARES is neutrino astronomy with upward going muons created in charged current muon neutrino interactions in the detector and its surroundings. Downward going muons are background for neutrino searches. These muons are the decay products of cosmic-ray collisions in the Earth's atmosphere far above the detector. This paper presents a method to identify and count electromagnetic showers induced along atmospheric muon tracks with the ANTARES detector. The method is applied to...

The ANTARES telescope has the capability to detect neutrinos produced in astrophysical transient sources. Potential sources include gamma-ray bursts, core collapse supernovae, and flaring active galactic nuclei. To enhance the sensitivity of ANTARES to such sources, a new detection method based on coincident observations of neutrinos and optical signals has been developed. A fast online muon track reconstruction is used to trigger a network of small automatic optical telescopes. Such alerts are...

The CUORICINO experiment was an array of 62 TeO$_{2}$ single-crystal bolometers with a total $^{130}$Te mass of $11.3\,$kg. The experiment finished in 2008 after more than 3 years of active operating time. Searches for both $0\nu$ and $2\nu$ double-beta decay to the first excited $0^{+}$ state in $^{130}$Xe were performed by studying different coincidence scenarios. The analysis was based on data representing a total exposure of N($^{130}$Te)$\cdot$t=$9.5\times10^{25}\,$y. No evidence for a...

Interesting nonlinear generalization of both Schr\"odinger's and Klein-Gordon's equations have been recently advanced by Tsallis, Rego-Monteiro, and Tsallis (NRT) in [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 106}, 140601 (2011)]. There is much current activity going on in this area. The non-linearity is governed by a real parameter $q$. It is a fact that the ensuing non linear q-Schr\"odinger and q-Klein-Gordon equations are natural manifestations of very high energy phenomena, as verified by...
